Rules for the Award Pack The Future 2023

The following rules must be observed when participating.

The application form is displayed under the heading “Participation”. The form can be filled out in German.

In order to complete your application, please upload your logo and an image of your innovative product in high resolution and, if necessary, upload any necessary proof of meeting the criteria, see details under “Participation”.

For the jury and the Innovation Book 2023, the applying company must name and describe the core elements of its innovation in a short summary. The text must not be longer than 1,300 characters including spaces and will then be used for the Innovation Book. It should be submitted in English and German (for IK members) or in English and French (for ELIPSO members). Submitting an additional translation for the missing language (German or French) is strongly recommended to avoid translation errors.

Please upload these additional texts as a PDF document with the corresponding file name under “File upload” if you have already reached the limit of 1200 characters for the first language in the descriptions.

Samples should not be submitted for large or bulky products. You will be judged on high resolution photos, drawings, digital animations or videos, which can be submitted in lieu of a sample.

For fresh food packaging, samples should include a product dummy or image.

The jury must be able to check and test the innovative character of the submitted product. For example, if the product is a closure, it should be submitted with the packaging for which it is intended. It is also important that you send us two product samples.

Candidates can submit a short video (max. 2 minutes) explaining the innovation of their submission. If the video is not in English, it must be accompanied by an explanatory text in English

Article 1: Background

As part of the promotion of the plastic packaging industry, ELIPSO (France) and IK (Germany) are launching and organizing from January 12, 2023.
the “PackTheFuture“Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award 2023 competition:

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The objectives of the competition are:
• To recognize innovations and sustainable developments in the field
• To promote the plastic packaging and film industry
• To develop contacts and projects among companies and partners

The “PackTheFuture 2023” competition is managed by ELIPSO, 13 rue de La Fayette, 75009 Paris, France and IK, Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade 43, 61348 Bad Homburg, Germany.

Article 2: Conditions of participation

• Companies submitting application documents must be manufacturers of plastic packaging or films and members of ELIPSO (in France) or the IK (in Germany). Also eligible to participate are the European subsidiaries of member companies.
• Candidates may submit packaging – hereinafter referred to as ‘product’ – developed and produced in a European country.
• The product presented must represent an innovation. Accordingly, the product must be new to the market (for the 2023 competition, not launched before January 2020) or in the development stage.
• Candidates may submit an innovation that has been jointly designed or made with a tool manufacturer, machine producer, raw material manufacturer, packer, filler, or other co-operator..

Article 3: Categories and prizes – 6 Innovation Categories

Candidates can participate in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 categories with different products :
-1- CATEGORY Design for Reuse
Design for Reuse aims to reduce the production of packaging promoting new habits of reuse for the same or another application. These packaging contribute to avoid single use plastics and therefore the environmental impact of the production and treatment of end-of-life waste.

-2- CATEGORY Design for Sustainable Material Sourcing
Designing the packaging in a way that enables sustainable sourcing of materials.

-3- CATEGORY Design for Recycling
(Use of recycled materials, recyclability, reduction of weight or resources). An innovation that is particularly environmentally friendly throughout the life cycle of the product, from the selection of raw materials to production, transportation, functionality, and disposal. Examples are criteria such as: Use of recycled materials, complete drainability, recyclability, reduction of resources while maintaining or improving the functionality of the product, etc.

-4- CATEGORY Design for environmentally sound use and disposal.
Design of packaging in a manner that supports responsible and environmentally sound use: by reducing the risk of littering, by providing options for easy portioning, secure reclosure, and complete residual emptying with the goal of avoiding packaging waste.

-5- PRODUCT PROTECTION CATEGORY
An innovation that improves the protection of packaged goods from the moment of production/packaging to the end user. Candidates should demonstrate in detail how their packaging reduces or prevents product damage or spoilage during transportation or product display on the shelf. Packaging can also help the end consumer better store, use, or consume the product. Examples: Extending the shelf life of the product, reducing or eliminating preservatives, no or less damage to the packaged product, user protection, etc.

-6- CATEGORY CONSUMER USE/Convenience.
An innovation that meets current consumer habits and trends, as well as new consumption demands of target groups such as children, seniors, families, etc. Examples include criteria such as: Out-of-home consumption, offer of different dosed quantities, easy opening of packages or child-proof closure, etc.
For the rest, please refer to the criteria and participation/categories mentioned as examples.

Three winners will be determined in each of the above categories, subject to the number of applications submitted and depending on the decision of the jury.
Each member company (legal entity) of ELIPSO or IC may submit only one packaging per category. A separate application must be submitted for each packaging. Therefore, only 6 or 7 packages can be submitted by one company in total.

A participation fee of € plus VAT will be charged per application. After receipt of the completed application documents, an invoice will be sent to the member companies of IK and ELIPSO.

Applications will only be considered after receipt of the participation fee of € 345 plus VAT by ELIPSO or IK.

The jury reserves the right to regroup an application from one category to another if this is in the interest of the candidate.

Article 4: Application documents

In order to participate in this competition, the candidate who is a member of ELIPSO or IC must fill out the application form in a way that is easy to understand and follow the information provided carefully.

In order to participate, the candidate must also meet the following criteria:

• Meet the criteria in Article 1 of these Conditions of Participation.
• Confirm that the company concerned respects the legislation and regulations related to packaging in the EU and in the countries of sale of the packaging submitted to the contest.
• Complete the application form online at www.packthefuture.com.
• An application form must be filled in completely for each packaging submitted.
• Each application must be accompanied by an accurate image of the innovation, in color and in high resolution (300 DPI) with a neutral background. Also, a logo of the company in high resolution (300 DPI) must be added, which will be used for the Innovation Booklet 2023
•Candidates may submit a short video (max. 2 minutes) explaining the innovation of their submission. If the video is not in English, it must be accompanied by an explanatory text in English.
• According to Article 3 of these Conditions of Participation, a participation fee of €345 plus VAT must be paid upon receipt of the invoice.

Important information for the shipment of product samples:
For large or bulky products, please do not send samples. They will be evaluated based on high resolution photos, drawings, digital animations or videos that can be submitted instead of a sample. For fresh food packaging, samples should include a product dummy or image.
• For this purpose, the jury must be able to verify and test the innovative character of the submitted product. For example, if the product is a closure, it should be submitted along with the packaging for which it is intended.

The product models and documents submitted to the organizers and assigned agencies will not be returned.

Article 5: Application Deadline

Online registration will begin on January 12, 2023. and completed application forms must be submitted online via www.packthefuture.de by midnight on March 07, 2023.

Article 6: The juries

• On March 14, 2023, a jury of experts will make a preliminary selection from the applications. The expert jury is composed of technical experts and packaging specialists.
• The main jury will meet on March 21, 2023 and will be composed of representatives from NGOs, journalists, scientists, professors, designers and packaging experts to review the applications from a professional, technical, and consumer perspective.

Should any member of the jury or their company have been closely or even remotely involved in the development of any of the submitted innovations, they will not be able to participate in the deliberations or in the final vote in the category of the innovation in question.
The deliberations remain confidential, and the jury members sign a privacy statement.

Decisions of the jury cannot be appealed and do not require justification

Article 7: Selection criteria

The jury will select the innovations that will receive an award based on the following criteria:

• Innovative character of the packaging
• Functionality and ergonomics
• Environmental benefits

Article 8: Ownership of the innovations and responsibility of the candidates

When an application is submitted for a product in 1, 2, 3 or 4 categories, the candidates declare that they own all rights, especially intellectual property over the products submitted to the competition (patents, trademarks, designs and models).

If the candidates do not own these rights, they declare that the owner of the rights, whose contact details will be provided, authorizes their participation and accepts the present rules.

In no case will the organizers be liable for any litigation related to the protection of intellectual property.

The Candidate guarantees to the Organizers and the Contest Management that he/she assumes any liability arising from possible claims of the intellectual property owner. The candidate is solely responsible for all disputes and disputes arising from his application, project or its implementation.

He will answer to the organizers for all possible damages and will be liable for any disturbances, claims and demands arising in this context.
The application contains the express permission for the organizers and the competition management to exhaust all promotional measures regarding the awarded prizes in the “PackTheFuture” Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award 2023 competition as they deem appropriate.

The candidates grant the organizers and the competition management the right to use the images and the presentation text of the innovation that receives an award for informational and promotional purposes in any media in France and in Germany and other countries.

Article 9: Prizes

The prizes in each of the categories consist of a trophy, a certificate and the right to use the label “Pack the Future” mentioning the year of the award. All applications will be published in the Innovation Book 2023.

Article 10: Use of the label

The trademark “PackTheFuture” Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award 2023″ is the joint property of IK and ELIPSO. Award winners may use the “PackTheFuture” – Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award brand and the logo of the Award received on their promotional materials and business documents; the year of the Award must be indicated.

Article 11: Award ceremony

IK and ELIPSO will hold the award ceremony on May 9, 2023 during the interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany. The date and place may be changed if necessary, without any compensation to the candidates.

Article 12: Right of access and rectification of information

Personal information provided in connection with the call for applications will be processed by means of data technology. Candidates have the right to access, rectify or delete data concerning them; a written request should be addressed to:

Article 13: Deposit of the “PacktheFuture” contest rules

The present competition rules are deposited with the company :

Participation in the Contest implies full acceptance of the present Conditions of Participation.

Article 14: Acceptance of these terms and conditions

Participation in the Contest implies full acceptance of the present Conditions of Participation, which are French law for ELIPSO members and German law for IK members, and which contractually bind the Organizers and the Contestant.

In case of force majeure, the organizers reserve the right to shorten, modify, extend, postpone or cancel all or part of the competition without notice. They cannot be held liable for this and no compensation can be claimed from the candidates.

However, appropriate changes may be announced by appropriate means, preferably via the competition website

The organizers reserve the right to temporarily suspend participation in the competition if the continuity of the services necessary for the running of the competition can no longer be guaranteed.

Additional provisions or, in the case of force majeure, amendments to these Terms and Conditions of Participation may be made during the Contest, if necessary. They will be considered as annexes to the present Conditions of Participation and will be deposited with the Depositary of the Contest Rules.

The date of selection of the finalists by the jury as well as the date of the final itself may be postponed. The organizers expressly reserve the right to extend or cancel the contest period in case of force majeure, including in the event that the jury does not consider any of the applications satisfactory.

Moreover, the organizers cannot be held responsible for events beyond their control or in case of Force Majeure that could lead to disruptions, changes or cancellation of the contest. The candidates assure to respect the present conditions of participation in order to take part in the contest.
The organizers ELIPSO and IK reserve the right to apply legal remedies and, in particular, to bring to justice anyone who disrupts, cheats, deceives, falsifies or attempts to do so the operations described in the present Conditions of Participation.

Objections or complaints related to the contest will be considered only if sent before 20.05.2023 (the postmark is decisive). They must be addressed to the organizers by standard letter. The letter must contain the exact date of participation in the contest, the full contact details of the participant and the reason for the complaint. Other forms of submitting a complaint will not be accepted.

If no agreement is reached within 30 days regarding the application or interpretation of these Conditions of Participation, the candidate may file a complaint with the competent official court, in each case at the place of the registered office of IK for German candidates and at the place of the registered office of ELIPSO for French candidates.
