Design for recycling

ADAPA DACH GmbH (Germany) with “VACUshrink(re)MEXX55”

The certified recyclable PE-based shrink bag VACUshrink(re) MEX 55 with EVOH high barrier is suitable for fresh and processed meat or non- gassy and mature cheese. It does not contain PA layers or PVdC barrier and is produced with- out cross-linking.

By using a three-dimensionally stretched polyolefin structure with a film thickness of only 55 μm, adapa has succeeded in meeting the high requirements for product protection and processability and combine these with greater sustainability: VACUshrink(re) MEX 55 scores with excellent mechanical properties: it can be pro- cessed smoothly on standard packaging systems and demonstrates good puncture resistance. The shrink bag is fully recyclable according to the CEFLEX Design for a Circular Economy Guideline, the recyclability having been certified with 18/20 points.

Our VACUshrink(re) MEX 55 has been awarded the World Star Award 2023 in the category Pack- aging Materials and Components.

ALBEA SERVICES SAS (France) wth ” Ecofusion PCR ThinWall“

EcoFusion Top with Thin-Wall & PCR max is the lightest and most circular solution ticking all boxes to move towards greater circularity combining 3Rs: reduction, recycled content, recycling-ready.

To really have a big impact in weight reduction, Albea removed one component by fusioning the head&cap leading to the EcoFusion Top design, thus clearly illustrating the efforts in reducing plastic consumption. Reducing weight is our top priority and EcoFusion Top +Thin-Wall 350µm sleeve vs standard cap+head+sleeve leads to a weight reduction of 55 %.

EcoFusion Top by its own only weights 2.4g vs 12g for the standard head+cap.

Moreover, the solution is made from 100 % PE making the tube recycling-ready in HDPE streams and integrates 41 % recycled plastics (PCR Max with 70 % r-HDPE in the sleeve).

Apart from the design, this innovation is a breakthrough in production process thanks to the ability to combine it on both extruded & laminate tubes.

APTAR BEAUTY (France) with “Shower gel range by The Body Shop with the recyclable pump “Future” by Aptar Beauty”.

Aptar Beauty has proudly collaborated with The Body Shop to re-launch the 750ml shower gel range using Aptar’s fully recyclable, mono- material and e-commerce capable pump, Future. The Body Shop explored how to integrate their circular economy goals and upgrade the pump to be fully recyclable with their PET bottle, while having a customized solution. Aptar Beauty was able to offer a unique proposal to The Body Shop to achieve their goal The Future pump is com- pletely made from a single-material, PE, thanks to a patented technology including a fully plastic engine. It is thus fully recyclable when paired with a PE or PET bottle, like the one sourced by The Body Shop.

Another unique feature is an incorporated lockable ring and 360° actuator that minimizes the risk of breakage and eliminates the need for a disposable safety ring, rendering it Amazon ISTA-6 compliant. The Future pump is thus a disruptive innovation in the beauty industry for technical innovation, sustainability, as well as consumer experience.

The Body Shop’s new pack was launched in Q4 2022 in Europe with a customized pump, using their green color and their logo on top.

LEYGATECH (France) with “LT clear 515R”

We would like to introduce our LT 515 laminat- ing film. The special feature of this product is its structure: EVOH/PE/EVOH, i.e. the EVOH layers are external, surrounding the polyethylene (PE) layer. This film provides high thermal resistance, very good optical properties and of course a gas barrier. If laminated to another PE film, it allows converters to produce single-material PE bags or lids.

LT 515 is ideal for printing, coating or sealing. It is ideal for substituting PET/PE or OPP laminates. Most importantly, this film is part of our circular economy range as it is 100 % recyclable in the existing recycling stream.

PROFOL GmbH (Germany) with ” CPPELL®“

Profol’s new CPPeel® lidding film is key to the production of monomaterial polypropylene packaging. CPPeel® is ideal for yoghurt pots, dairy product packaging, salad trays, portion packs or cosmetic containers.

Solvent-based heat-seal lacquers are not required when using CPPeel®. In addition, the release structure is already applied, so CPPeel® is ready for use in the magazine.

The CO2 footprint of CPPeel® is 4 times better than existing aluminium solutions. The new CPPeel® lidding film in transparent or white, together with cups and trays made of PP, forms a great basis for a sustainable mono-material packaging that is 100 % recyclable. This monomaterial packaging design enables packaging to be easily sorted and recycled. That is why CPPeel® was awarded an Interseroh rating of “very good” in the “Made for Recycling” category.

CPPeel® is machine-compatible on existing systems and performs with a flat surface.

In addition, CPPeel® film convinces trade and consumers with a much higher puncture resistance and a high colour rendering.

Special jury awards

Special Award: SIDEL (France) with “1Skin

1SKIN™ is a stylish, minimalist 1L container for sensitive beverages that creates distinctive, sustainable brand positioning. It is designed to embrace the new circular economy, achieve a low carbon footprint and open the doors to new, digital communication levers.

1SKIN™ features an eco-friendly tethered cap and ensures high performance while preserving product shelf life with just the right weight of 100 % recycled PET. By replacing virgin with recycled PET, 1SKIN™ also lowers CO2 emissions 5 times over. Its no-label design reduces its primary packaging weight by 10 % too. And while leveraging a look and finish that is similar to glass, 1SKIN™ offers premium, sustainable pack- aging with 10 times less CO2 emissions.

The bottle also offers consumers an extended brand experience, thanks to a QR code printed on the cap that provides access to more info while reducing carbon footprint by eliminat- ing labels and associated materials. Moreover, the multiple font and texture options used to engrave logos, nutritional facts and messages directly on the bottle, highlight info and intensify brand appeal.

Special mention: PEKU Folien GmbH (Germany) with “Drawstring Bag

To complete our sustainable product catalogue and aim to make all our products 100 % recycla- ble, we have developed the utilitarian and widely used drawstring bag into a one-material product. The previous cotton cord has been replaced by an LDPE cord. The function remains the same with the PE cord: the simple closing, opening and fastening of the bag with the cord enables safe multiple use and keeps the packaged product hygienically clean. Bag and cord are made of one material and are therefore 100 % recyclable after use.

To ensure that the PE cord does not weld itself to the PE bag during the sealing process, but can move freely in the bag seam as before, an optimal solution was developed after numerous tests and with a lot of film expertise. This measure means that the cord no longer has to be separated from the bag during disposal, but can be fed into the cycle as a complete product for recycling.

A strong development for our green future!

Category design for product protection

BISCHOF & KLEIN SE (Germany) with “TacFLex® 900″

The TacFlex® 900 series was introduced to the market last year. The expansion to include types with recyclate content required the development of a suitable material flow, as usual sources of regranulate do not meet the high requirements of surface protection films. This has now been achieved with Cirlen regranulate production at Bischof+Klein; the first films have been extruded in the Innolab and industrial production is imminent.

An innovation that improves the protection of the contents from filling to the end consumer.

Adhesive-free and therefore fully recyclable, yet still strong in adhesion, resource-saving, climate-friendly – and now also available with 30% recycled content.

For adhesive-coated films, there are currently hardly any possibilities for material recycling; by dispensing with adhesives, complete recyclability is created here and thus a significant improve- ment in the recyclability.

TacFlex® 900 with 30% Cirlen regranulate content has been successfully extruded on a laboratory scale and is now ready for the market.

SLEEVER (France) with ” LDPET White Barrier“

Sleever launches in 2023, the 1st low density “light barrier” sleeve label compatible with closed loop PET recycling: the LDPET® White Barrier Innovation dedicated to liquid and solid food marketers (beverages and dairy products).

Furthermore, thanks to its “system” offer, Sleever proposes for its implementation a low consump- tion equipment “Combisteam LDPET WB”, Combisteam: modular, designed for high output, it allows to reduce energy consumption by almost 50 % without compromising on performance.

This innovation meets the needs of marketers working with fresh and light-sensitive products. They can now combine an enhanced brand image with an integral packaging that offers visibility and differentiation on the shelf, with an eco-designed packaging made of transparent, recyclable PET in a closed loop.

The light barrier function of the LDPET White Barrier product provides extended shelf life and protection of vitamins, colours and flavours.

Design for consumer benefit / convenience

BISCHOF & KLEIN SE (Germany) with “U-Pack® FFS”

The U-Pack® FFS is a combination of the well- known standard FFS film and our U-Pack®. The U-Pack® FFS is an upgrade of your FFS film: Stabilo seams, a resealing system and a high-quality carrying handle are now possible. The aim was to offer the end customer features that are standard in single-bag filling but were previously a problem in high-speed filling on reels. Now, with existing filling technology, our customer can offer his product and thus his customer solutions to everyday problems with large containers (10-50 kg). With the reclosure, the packaging can be closed after product removal and allows for longer shelf life. In addition, the closure protects the product from insects and small animals. An easy-opening function without the use of a knife is also possible. The carrying handle offers easy handling for large bags. In addition, the U-Pack® FFS can be filled at the same machine speed as standard FFS. There is no need to invest in addi- tional equipment in the line. This also eliminates the disadvantage that these sometimes reduce the filling speed by up to 40 %.

BERICAP Holding GmbH (Germany) and easyconnect Working Group with “Transfersystem easyconnect”.

The cap, jointly developed and manufactured by BERICAP, is part of the closed transfer system easyconnect, which makes the filling of liquid crop protection products more efficient and saf- er. Used with the coupler, the system saves time and effort when filling the syringe and reduces the user’s risk of contamination by a factor >50 compared to the previous filling method. For emptying, the coupler opens the easyconnect lid and closes it again leak-proof by an innovative mechanism.

Benefits:

• Convenient & fast transfer (1 L/s transfer speed).
• Reduction of contamination risk for the user & the environment with the possibility of exact dosing
• Screw cap remains on the canister and does not need to be screwed on or off by hand
• Integrated rinsing of the canister & the lid. This makes partial withdrawals possible.
• Recyclable design made of HDPE, thus integra- tion into the recycling stream of containers

Broad support of easyconnect by industry partners:

• ADAMA, Barclay, BASF, Bayer, Certis Belchim, CORTEVA, Globachem, FMC, Nufarm, Rovensa, SUMITOMO, Syngenta
